The Artist:

Vasundhara Sellamuthu is a London based South Indian artist. With an interest in vernacular design and nomenclature, her practice considers themes of cross-cultural translation and authorship. Her shaped relief and wall paintings cites colourful architecture without architects in the Indian subcontinent, its links to Memphis design, and echoes in Western hard-edge abstraction. Through playful inversions, her text signs including “London – Europe’s Kolkata,” borrow the language of way-finding infrastructure to consider inherent power dynamics in nicknames for Indian cities.

During the pandemic Sellamuthu engaged the residents of Walthamstow in creative writing on the theme of home for The Useful and Beautiful Project, which was presented in the format of a Rajasthani kavad at the William Morris Gallery, London (2021). Sellamuthu received the Useful & Beautiful artist commission from William Morris Big Local and Wood Street Walls, London (2020-21).

Show participation includes ‘Distant Fellowship – Morris and South Asia,’ William Morris Gallery, London (2021), ‘Stacking dreams,’ London Festival of Architecture at Wood Street Studios, London (2019), ‘Poka-yoke’ and ‘Drawing Index,’ at Cholamandal Artists Village, Chennai (2019). She graduated with a Distinction in MA Fine Art from City & Guilds of London Art School (2021), holds a BA in History of Art from Goldsmiths’ (2013), and studied Architecture at the Architectural Association (2008-2011). Born in Coimbatore and brought up in Chennai, India, she now lives and works in London, UK.
